A Word From Our Pastor . . .
“A Word for September”
In the gospel of Luke, chapter 10, there is an interesting account of a visit Jesus made to two women who are sisters. Their names are Mary and Martha. They invite Jesus, and probably some of his disciples, to stay for a meal, and so the group reclines at table to wait for dinner. The catch in the story is that Martha heads to the kitchen to do the preparation while Mary sits at the Teacher’s feet with the others and listens to the conversation. Mary hears lots of good stuff that she applies to her life, about where she is at in relation to God. Mary’s feeling great and all is well and good until Martha realizes that she is alone, and feels that her sister should be helping. Many things have been written about this circumstance; about the differences in their personalities – Martha the task-oriented one and Mary the party-girl. Jesus brings some perspective to the “disagreement” between the sisters when he identifies Mary as the one who has chosen what is better. Are we sometimes too busy with “life” and getting all the things done that we have to get done, that we miss the really important, eternal things – truths about God to be pursued and known. If he was writing it, Jesus might have put a title to this story: “Stop and smell the roses!” |
