A Word from the Pastor. . .
April showers bring May flowers! We say those words to convince ourselves that rain is good and has a payoff; that it won’t last forever and eventually something better will result. The bad part is when May comes around and it is still raining; our sense of justice and fairness is tested at those times. Hey – there are beautiful flowers around even though it’s raining! Yes, but I wanted the flowers AND the sunshine. Didn’t someone actually promise us a rose garden?
The other night I was watching a movie that I have seen before. It is one I like and I’ll probably watch it many times again. It’s the movie “Castaway” and it is about much more than a guy plane-wrecked on a desert island. Tom Hanks is the main character, and at the start of the show he is a man who seems to be “on top and in control” of his world. Good job, nice life, great girlfriend – nothing but a bright future ahead of him. He has taken a lot for granted until that plane goes down and reality takes on a very different color for him. He survives in some pretty ingenious and incredible ways, and with some good fortune thrown in as well. He survives and is even able to escape the island and be rescued because of his determination to return to and restore the things he has temporarily lost, primarily his fiancé. But three years later when he returns to his “old life” all has changed. He discovers that this life seldom gives us what we think we deserve or are entitled to.
God tells us that there is only one assurance in this universe; the hope of eternal life in Jesus Christ. God promises us that our sins will be forgiven and our relationship with Him will be made right if we trust in Christ. Seek and you WILL find; ask and you WILL receive; knock on His door and He WILL respond.
